Careers: Know Your Industry

We all have those dream careers, whether it was a firefighter when you were a kid, or that modern-day dream of being a film producer,it is always possible, and here’s why:

If you want something bad enough and you honestly believe it, then you can do it. You may remember hearing this one from your parents or teachers, but clichés exist for a reason – they ring true.

Now that’s all fine and well, but how do you get from a dream to a career?

The answer is simple: pure interest and determination.

So if you don’t yet have all the knowledge to be an architect, or you haven’t developed all the expertise to be a restaurant owner, interest is the first step.

This is because interest breeds knowledge and not the other way around.

Aside from money and personal connections, how do people climb to the top of any industry?  Interest and dedication.

If you indeed want to be a psychologist, then surely you are reading psychology journals and articles for pleasure in your free time.

If you want to open your own dance studio, are you developing a business plan and reading all about being self-employed to achieve the dream?

Interest and a little reading will give you a head-start in your industry.

The gift of knowledge

If knowledge is power, then knowledge of your industry is employment power.

You may have your heart set on a certain industry, or, if you are like the majority of the world – unsure about just exactly want you want to do (career wise) with your life. However, I’m sure you have a few job preferences.

Now then is the time to start learning your industry, or potential industries inside  out.

What skills does it take to be a builder?  What trends will I have to learn to stay on top of the advertising industry?  What will I need to learn to organise a successful event?

These are indeed some of the questions.

The National Careers Service. is a good example of how online resources can help you shape your future. With information on over 750 different jobs, you can learn exactly what will be expected of you, from qualifications to skills and even basic salary.

The skills health checker will help you to assess what skills you have and those that you will need for your desired career.  NCS can even help you find funding to get on the ladder of your dream industry.

Once you have learned the foundations of your industry, you can continue to follow news and other innovations around the job and finally, start to track down those employers who can give you a foot in the door.

It is all possible; just keep your eye on the ball, understand your industry by keeping informed, and let your interest blossom into knowledge that will make you an industry expert before you have even begun!
